The core problems facing our lovely world right now are overpopulation, climate change and human rights.
Overpopulation occurs when the number of individuals of a species exceeds the carrying capacity of their ecological niche, and individuals of the species no longer thrive. In worst case scenarios, the habitat is destroyed, and a die-off of the species occurs, until the carrying capacity of the range is balanced with the population, and the habitat is restored.
Climate change, as we are experiencing now, is a worst case example of habitat destruction as a result of overpopulation. We are fouling our own nest to speak, poisoning our air, water and land with too many waste products of human activity. The insatiable greed of profit hunters, who refuse to acknowledge that human activity is playing a role, also contributes to the disastrous overproduction of toxic chemicals like CO2 and non-biodegradable products like plastics which contribute to environmental degradation.
Human rights, specifically the right and responsibility of individual women to manage their personal reproductive capacity, is the most important check against overpopulation. When men regulate and control women's reproductive capacity, distortions occur. We see this most dramatically where the highest birth rates are resulting in chronic poverty, famine, disease, the breakdown of social systems, and escalating war around the world.
This topic is something of a hobby horse of mine, so I will have more to say on this topic!
